Accessibility questions to ask before an East Africa trip

Evaluate the actual room, vehicle, flight, activity and assistance arrangements through a traveller-led access checklist.

Replace a label with a description of your day

Accessible travel planning works best when it starts with what you need to do comfortably and independently, or with assistance you have chosen. A hotel or tour described as accessible may address only part of the journey. The room, vehicle, airport, activity and communication arrangements all need to work together. This guide offers questions for evaluating that chain. It does not rate an entire country or guarantee that a particular activity suits every traveller.

Begin with a functional description rather than assuming a diagnosis explains your needs. You might need step-free movement, a certain transfer method, space for equipment, information in a preferred format or time to process instructions. State what is essential and what is a preference. You do not need to send health documents in the initial inquiry. Start with the practical details that let a planner investigate suitable arrangements without making assumptions about your abilities.

Map the journey from the first meeting point

Write the full sequence from arrival to departure, including every handover. For each stage, identify the surface or transport involved and what assistance is required. An airport service may end before the transfer vehicle, while a lodge's assistance may begin only at its entrance. Ask who covers the space between them. A journey is only as workable as the connections between its individually suitable parts.

Keep the traveller involved in decisions about assistance. Do not assume a companion can or wishes to provide lifting, personal care or constant navigation support. Ask the provider what it can actually arrange, under what conditions and with what equipment. Record the answer for the specific date and service. A vague promise that staff will help may be well intentioned but insufficient to evaluate whether an arrangement is appropriate.

Ask about the actual safari vehicle

Vehicle questions should cover entry, seating, movement and observation. Ask about step heights, door openings, handholds and the method of transferring to a seat. If you need to remain in a wheelchair, ask whether the actual vehicle is designed and equipped for that arrangement. Request information about securement and restraints rather than treating available floor space as proof of suitability. A photograph can help, but it should support specific answers.

Also consider the experience once aboard. Can you sit comfortably for the intended duration, see from your position and communicate a need for a break? Ask how the guide manages stops within park rules and where appropriate facilities are available. An adapted entry method does not resolve every part of the day. If a vehicle substitution is possible, establish that essential features must be checked again before accepting the replacement.

Evaluate the whole accommodation route

Ask for the path from vehicle drop-off to reception, room, bathroom and dining area. Record surfaces, gradients, steps and any alternative route. A ground-floor room can still involve obstacles before the door or within the bathroom. Ask about the specific room category proposed, not a property's best example. If photographs or measurements are needed, request them in a way that answers your own equipment and movement requirements.

Inside the room, consider door clearance, bed access, transfer space and the bathroom arrangement. Ask what equipment is provided and what must be brought or hired separately. Do not assume that a grab rail, shower seat or movable furniture is available because a room is called accessible. If an adjustment is offered, clarify who makes it and when it will be checked. The aim is a usable room on arrival, not an unresolved discussion after a tiring journey.

Treat air travel as a separate assessment

AirKenya publishes information about passengers with reduced mobility and asks for advance notice when assistance is required. Its baggage policy also addresses certain collapsible assistive devices separately from ordinary luggage. These are useful examples of why carrier-specific questions matter. They do not establish that every device can be accommodated or that a traveller's boarding needs will be met on every aircraft. Confirm the actual flight arrangement rather than assuming a general policy resolves it.

Give the carrier or responsible booking contact the equipment specifications they require through an appropriate process. Ask how the device will be handled, where assistance begins and ends, and what happens if the aircraft changes. If personal medical advice is needed, obtain it from an appropriate clinician. Keep that separate from the transport feasibility conversation. A planner should coordinate practical information without making a health suitability judgment outside their role.

Include sensory and communication access

Access needs are not limited to steps and wheelchairs. Ask how briefings are delivered, whether important instructions can be provided in writing and how the guide will communicate during an activity. A traveller may need time to read, a clear view of the speaker or another agreed method. Discuss this before arrival so it becomes part of the arrangement rather than a last-minute request in a noisy or unfamiliar setting.

Accommodation information should also consider lighting, sound and orientation where these matter. Ask for descriptions of the route, the room position and how assistance is requested. Avoid assuming that a quiet-looking photograph proves a quiet environment. A specific explanation of needs helps a provider respond honestly. Where an arrangement cannot be confirmed, keep that limitation visible so the traveller can decide whether an alternative would be more suitable.

Assess activities without relying on general encouragement

A wildlife drive, boat excursion, heritage walk and forest trek involve different requirements. Ask about each separately. For a boat, investigate the approach to the boarding point, the transfer method, seating and how instructions are communicated. For a walk, ask about surfaces, gradients, rest opportunities and the possibility of an adapted route. Do not let a provider's enthusiasm replace the information needed to judge the activity.

Akagera's official visitor resources list vehicle outings, Lake Ihema boat excursions and other activities. Their existence does not establish that each is accessible to a particular person. Use the activity description as a starting point for specific questions to the operator. If an alternative is proposed, assess it by the experience it offers rather than treating it as automatically equivalent. The traveller should decide which tradeoffs are acceptable.

Plan energy and recovery as carefully as equipment

A technically possible journey can still be tiring if it contains repeated transfers, early starts or little room to recover. Describe how long outings usually work for you and what kinds of breaks help. Ask whether the camp location supports returning between activities or whether the day would be spent away from the base. That practical rhythm may influence the choice more than a single accessible feature.

Avoid stacking uncertain or demanding activities on consecutive days without considering their combined effect. A slower route can preserve participation by reducing the amount of energy spent moving between places. Compare a version with fewer bases and notice what becomes easier. This is a planning option, not a judgment about what disabled travellers should want. Some people prefer an active schedule; the aim is to support their chosen pace with accurate information.

Confirm assistance, contingency and privacy

Ask who is responsible for each agreed adaptation and what happens if equipment or a service becomes unavailable. A contingency should identify a workable next step, not merely promise that someone will solve the problem. Discuss communication if plans change and whether the traveller can receive updates in the required format. Keep the confirmed arrangements together so that a new driver or accommodation contact does not have to infer them.

Share sensitive information only when necessary for a particular service and through an appropriate channel. Initial trip planning usually benefits more from functional needs and equipment details than from a broad medical history. If a provider requires additional documentation, ask what is required and why. The traveller's preferences about assistance and information sharing should remain central, including when a companion is helping organize the holiday.

Use evidence to approve the route

For example, a traveler may have three essential conditions: a vehicle they can board using an agreed transfer method, a bathroom with enough space for their equipment, and written activity briefings. Record each separately. If the room and briefing are confirmed but the vehicle is still unspecified, the route has an unresolved essential condition; two satisfactory answers do not outweigh it. Obtain the vehicle details or choose another arrangement before accepting. This method keeps the decision with the traveler and makes clear exactly which part of the journey needs work.

Tell RoamAfrika your preferred destinations, functional access needs, equipment and chosen level of assistance. Ask for a proposal that identifies the actual room, vehicle and activities and separates verified arrangements from open questions. Confirm essential features again if suppliers or equipment change. A useful accessible trip plan is a chain of specific, understood arrangements that supports your participation; it is not a blanket promise attached to a destination name.
