Official entry information for East Africa

Find the official immigration sources for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, and organise the checks for each traveller and crossing.

Use this directory to find the right instructions

Entry preparation begins with the traveller and the route, not with a regional visa slogan. Record the passport you will use, nationality, residence, reason for travel, intended arrival and departure dates, transit stops and every entry into each country. People travelling together may need different documents. A tour organiser can help coordinate the information, but the issuing authority determines the applicable process.

The official sources attached to this guide provide starting points for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, plus Zanzibar-specific arrival information. They were checked on September 8, 2026. Use the country sections below to identify the relevant authority, then follow its current instructions when preparing an application and again before departure. Save the official address with your working record so that a later status check or route change takes you back to the same issuing authority.

Kenya: begin with the official eTA eligibility route

Kenya’s official eTA eligibility page distinguishes authorisation types and directs readers to the How to Apply information for exemptions. Start there rather than assuming that every visitor follows the same process. The immigration directorate links to the government eTA platform, which helps establish the appropriate official route. A search result using the words visa-free does not settle whether any advance authorisation applies to you.

Read the category against the actual journey. A transit through Kenya, a visit followed by departure, and several entries are different situations to explain. If the route changes after you have prepared the documents, check whether that affects the chosen process. Do not select a category merely because its label sounds close enough to the holiday description.

The portal’s help information separates receipt of an application or payment from approval. Keep the reference needed to track status and save the actual approval document when issued. An email confirming that a submission was received is not interchangeable with a decision. Use the official support route for a problem rather than submitting repeated applications simply because the first response is not immediate.

Tanzania: match purpose, dates and supporting information

Tanzania’s online immigration terms direct applicants to use the correct category and provide the required supporting material. They also explain that submitted applications cannot simply be edited. This makes a careful check before submission worthwhile: passport details, purpose, travel dates and supporting documents should tell the same story. A small inconsistency can be more consequential than a polished itinerary cover page.

Use the authority’s current instructions to establish whether an application is required and which route applies. Do not assume that a friend’s arrival experience applies to your nationality or passport. If your trip includes activities beyond an ordinary holiday, explain those activities accurately rather than choosing a tourist category for convenience. The authority is the appropriate place to resolve uncertainty about purpose.

The official terms also distinguish granted dates from a freely movable reservation and approval from the eventual entry decision. If flights change, check the document rather than assuming its validity moves with the booking. Keep the relevant confirmations available for travel, but remember that a visa or approval does not replace any other applicable arrival requirement.

Uganda: follow the official tourist-category page

Uganda’s immigration service provides a dedicated tourist-visa page linked to its application portal. The page describes supporting information such as itinerary and accommodation documentation and distinguishes application, approval and border stages. Use that official category page as the starting point for the actual traveller’s circumstances. A third-party checklist may omit an exception or describe a different category.

Assemble the route information before entering the form. The intended first arrival, overnight arrangements and onward journey should be consistent with the bookings you actually expect to use. If a detail remains provisional, follow the authority’s instructions for that situation rather than inventing a reservation. Keep a record of what was submitted so you can identify the effect of a later change.

Check current immigration and health instructions close to departure as well as during initial planning. These are separate areas of preparation. A valid entry document does not answer a clinical question, and a clinician’s recommendation does not itself establish an immigration requirement. Give the relevant authority or professional the full route, including countries visited before arriving in Uganda.

Rwanda: keep visitor categories distinct

Rwanda’s immigration directorate publishes a visitor-visa directory with separate categories, purposes and application routes. Read the section that corresponds to your visit rather than combining convenient details from several headings. A holiday, family visit, conference or other activity may need different consideration. The fact that each appears on the same page does not make the conditions interchangeable.

If you are considering a regional tourist arrangement, verify it with the authority responsible for issuing it and with the other countries in the proposed sequence. Do not assume the phrase East African applies to every country commonly included in an East Africa holiday. The order of entry, any departure from the participating area and later return can matter to the analysis.

Record the decision for each person in the travelling party. One person’s residence status or passport category should not be used as the default for everyone else. Where the instructions are unclear for your situation, seek an answer before making a dependent commitment that is difficult to change. Keep the question specific enough for the authority to address.

Zanzibar: check the separate island arrival requirements

A mainland Tanzania itinerary followed by Zanzibar still needs an island-specific arrival check. Current UK FCDO Tanzania entry guidance describes required Zanzibar Insurance Corporation inbound insurance and says an ordinary international travel policy is not a substitute. Its passport guidance is written for British citizens, so use the country authorities for personal applicability rather than treating the entire page as a universal visa rule.

The mandatory arrival product and your wider travel insurance are different questions. Confirm the current required purchase route and any applicable conditions through official channels, then separately assess the cover needed for the whole journey. Do not assume that satisfying an arrival requirement establishes adequate protection for safari activities, medical care or the return home.

Avoid relying on an old announcement for current price, exemptions or policy wording. Keep the actual evidence required for arrival accessible with the other travel documents. A booking confirmation saying Zanzibar is included does not demonstrate that these separate arrangements have been completed for every traveller.

Build one document record per person

For each country entry, record the official source used, the date checked, the applicable category or exemption, submission status and the document retained. This is a working record, not a substitute for reading the instructions. It should make unfinished tasks visible and prevent a payment receipt from being marked as an approval.

Check names and passport details against the actual document, including which passport a dual national intends to use. If a passport will be renewed, establish the implications before applying with details that may change. Keep copies securely and share sensitive information only through the appropriate channel. A general trip inquiry does not need a full passport scan just to discuss route options.

Add a final review after the flights and country sequence are settled. Transit can introduce another country’s requirements, and a return to the original airport can create another entry. Read the whole journey from home to home rather than checking only the countries where the main holiday activities take place.

The result should be a clear set of completed, pending and unresolved items for each person. Bring unresolved questions to the relevant immigration authority, carrier or qualified health professional according to their subject. This approach keeps the directory useful even as rules change: it helps you find the decision-maker, describe the journey accurately and recognise which evidence is still missing.
